In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this nursing home received an A+ in the area of long-term care. When nursing homes receive this type of score in long-term care it is typically a good sign for patient care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 97.26776 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly is often a life or death condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility does not leave this to chance. The last datapoint we looked at was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 2.23 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.

This nursing home also earned an A+ inspection score, making it one of the few facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This grade is based on the nursing home's inspection reports. An A+ in this category is one of the biggest complements we can pay to a nursing home. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with better grades in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This nursing home was hit with 9 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered severe. This indicates that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to pose an immediate threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Moving on our next area, we awarded this nursing home a score of A for our short-term care rating. This is a first-rate rating. In determining these short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The last metric we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place performed as well as just about any facility in Alabama in this area with 77.6 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Historical

In our last area, we gave this nursing home an A+ for its nursing grade. This completed an elite profile. We assessed the skill-level of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses were with residents, in calculating our rating in this category. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as reliable indicators of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
