Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this place ended up being a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in our inspections category. This is just about as good as it gets in this category. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

This facility also received an A+ for its short-term care grade. In determining our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that 6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Turning our third category, we awarded this facility a grade of A for its long-term care score. This is a dominant rating. Nursing homes that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

The final area we looked at is nursing, where this nursing home received a grade of A. This completed a very impressive profile. Few facilities received an A- or higher in each of our categories. Our nursing grade analyzes the facility's nurse staffing levels. We weigh both the levels of training of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of turning a resident at least once a day.
