Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was not bad, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively minor. While this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Nurse Quality
This facility also excelled in our nursing category, where it earned a grade of B+. Few facilities performed better in this area. We scrutinized the licensure of nurses at the nursing home, as well as the number of hours the nurses worked with patients, in determining our rating in this category. This particular nursing home provided 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This place excelled in these areas, with excellent scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.
Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at was long-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a solid grade of C. Our long-term care ratings are more critical for people requiring more traditional assistance related to personal care. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination record. We were optimistic to learn that this facility vaccinated 99.05956 percent of its patients for pneumonia. This nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.74 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we rated was short-term care. For that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. Short-term care ratings are based on a nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. The final metric we considered in this area is the number of patients that were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 43.4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
