Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave it an A-. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more favorable category grades was in the category of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. It actually outpaced most facilities in this category. Facilities that excel in this category tend to provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a deadly condition for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't take any chances. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
This facility received its next best category grade in the category of short-term care. We gave this facility a B- in this area, which is a respectable grade. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we assess a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is frequently a solid assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We weren't able to track down registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this place. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5.2 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Nurse Quality
The last area we graded was nursing. For this category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. There are many subcategories within this grade. Most of the criteria reflect levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This figure is far below average. Finally, our nursing scores also factor in some quality-focused measures. We especially like to look at the percentage of patients who experienced pressure ulcers and major falls. These data points are measures of the quality of nursing care, since superior care can reduce these issues.
