Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this nursing home earned an impressive grade of A in our long-term care category. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. After assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. In that category, we awarded this facility an A-. Our nursing grade includes a number of factors. The most important factor is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place North Dakota in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving residents more frequently.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

We gave this facility an A- for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with higher grades in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The final area we analyzed was this nursing home's worst area. Nevertheless, even its worst category would actually be a strength for most facilities. In fact, we gave it an above average grade of B for our short-term care category. Our short-term care ratings are based on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a broad range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 4 percent of this facility's residents returned home.
