Facility Inspections
We also would like to emphasize the fact that this facility has earned excellent inspections recently. We gave them an A in this category. Our inspection ratings account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a high-end short-term care score. Indeed, this turned out to be this nursing home's second most impressive category score. In that category, we awarded this facility a score of A. With our short-term care assessment, we seek to create a fair gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess the nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 6.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a very strong long-term care score. In fact, this is its third best category score. In that category, we gave this facility a score of A. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is often a dangerous health condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility does not leave this to chance. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to our fourth area, this facility also excelled in the nursing category. In fact, we gave it a grade of B+ in this area. This finalized a first-rate report card. Our nursing score weighs numerous data points. The most heavily weighted one is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This nursing home provides 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home North Dakota in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a protocol of turning patients even once per day.
