The primary reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far better than its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A-. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Another one of this nursing home's higher category grades was in the area of long-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of B+. It actually outpaced most facilities in this category. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 93.35443 percent of its patients. This is a few points lower than we expected but still a respectable figure. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing grade. We gave this nursing home an impressive grade of D. There are a number of criteria within this grade. Many of the datapoints relate to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averaged just 0.5 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing scores. This nursing home fared well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these metrics to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.

Switching gears to our next category, we awarded this facility a grade of D in our short-term care category. This was the facility's worst category grade. In the category of short-term care, we strive to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. With a grade this poor in this area, we were not stunned to discover that this place was below average in two of the key staffing metrics we assess. It provided substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most facilities. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
