We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. In determining our nursing grades, we look at both staffing levels and the training levels of those nurses. This nursing home boasts a really impressive 5.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly highly skilled levels of nurses. This is one of the better totals of nursing hours we found. On top of providing high levels of nursing care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed as well as any facility in the country in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

This facility received dominant marks in the area of short-term care. For this reason, it was given one of our highest scores in that area with a grade of A+. Short-term care ratings are based in part on a facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a broad spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Remarkably, this place provides about one and a half times as many hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we assessed. This is typically an excellent sign. The final item we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in California in this area with 68.4 percent of its patients returning home.

This nursing home also received a nearly flawless government inspection report. As a result, it earned one of our highest scores in that category with a grade of A+. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category generally have few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

The final area we rated was this nursing home's weakest category. However, even its worst category would likely be a strength for most facilities. In fact, we gave it a favorable grade of B in our long-term care category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of providing very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. This combination proved to be effective as this place also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
