Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
Although we graded this facility very poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable nursing score this year. We gave it a B- in this category. Nursing ratings are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, our nursing ratings also consider quality-based assessments, such as preventing major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is typically a good indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also didn't perform terribly in the area of short-term care. Indeed, we awarded it a B- in that category, which is among its higher grades. In the category of short-term care, we try to qualify measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the typical facility. The final measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Long-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this facility only received a D for its long-term care score, which is not a very good score. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is a very respectable total. To our surprise, this place also keeps its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
Facility Inspections
Turning the last category of inspections, this facility had an abysmal showing. Sadly, it received an F in our inspection category. We would advise paying close attention to any deficiencies on a facility's inspection reports when it receives this poor of an inspection score. We would pay close attention to the level of severity of the deficiencies. This particular facility was assessed one category L deficiency, which is the most serious category of deficiencies. This category indicates inspectors uncovered a widespread deficiency putting patient health or safety in immediate jeopardy. Even a single deficiency of this severity really pulls a nursing home's inspection score down. We are also concerned by the fact that this facility was flagged by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. We prefer to avoid facilities with this designation. Please do your best to find an alternative nursing home.
