We want to point out that this nursing home outperformed its overall grade in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in this category with an A-. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

This nursing home also was awarded a strong grade in our short-term care category. We gave this facility a better than average grade of B+ in that category. Short-term care scores are meaningful for people in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a vast spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more than 50% more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The last measure we assessed in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. It performed better than most nursing homes in this area with 50.5 percent of its patients returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

Another reason we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned an A+ nursing rating. This is simply as good as it gets in this area. Our nursing category includes many subcategories, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides an impressive 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day. Lastly, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to major injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home in the country. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Switching gears to the last area, we awarded this facility a grade of D for our long-term care category. This was the facility's weakest category rating. Naturally, this category pulled down the nursing home's overall profile to a certain degree. Nursing homes that don't fare well in this category typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine personal care we looked at. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 92.85714 percent of its patients, which is a few points less than we were hoping for. Surprisingly, this place was actually decent at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.
