Long-term Care Quality
We want to point out that this facility earned a much better grade for long-term care than it did overall. we gave it one of our best grades in that area with an A. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. One of the datapoints we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the nursing home population. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Facility Inspections
Inspections is another category where this facility excelled. In fact, we gave this facility an A for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Our inspection grades weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category typically have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality
We gave this facility a grade of just D for our short-term care rating. This is well below average in this category. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We look at a facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we considered the number of residents who ultimately returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 5.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to our final category, this facility really did not fare well. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this was its worst category grade. The nursing score assesses a handful of factors, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This facility offered a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also didn't fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility.
