Facility Inspections
We also wanted to point out that this facility has received near flawless health inspections recently. We gave them an A+ in this category. Inspection scores account for several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home fared well in the area of short-term care. As a result, we awarded it a grade of A- for that area, which happens to be one of our most dominant grades. Our short-term care ratings are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a wide spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. This place excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it supplied more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the typical facility. This is generally a great sign. The last datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed better than most nursing homes in this area with 52.3 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. We assessed the skill-level of nurses working for the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses were with patients, in computing our grade in this category. This particular facility provided 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident daily. Approximately one quarter of that care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. Both of these figures easily exceed the national average. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the percentage of its patients sustaining falls leading to serious injury, this place performed as well as any facility in New York. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we assessed is long-term care. In this area, we gave this facility an acceptable grade of B-. This turned out to be this nursing home's worst area. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to looking at the very respectable quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were happy with the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 98.64253 percent of its patients, which is an impressive total. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.07 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
