Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Our inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category usually have few severe deficiencies. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Contributing to its top-shelf profile, this facility also performed well in our short-term care category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A in that category. Short-term care grades are commonly used to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must feature better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to return home from the facility. We found that 6.4 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

The next area we looked at was long-term care. Contributing to its impressive resume, this facility also performed well in that category. In fact, it received a grade of of A- for the area. Facilities that excel in this category typically provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The final category we rated turned out to be this nursing home's weakest category. However, even its lowest point would be a strength for most facilities. We gave it a favorable grade of B in nursing. In computing our nursing grades, we assess both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
