Facility Inspections
In addition to being a respectable nursing home overall, this facility also excelled in the category of inspections, where it received an A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Unfortunately, this facility was assessed a category L deficiency, which is unexpected given its inspection grade. This category of deficiency means CMS found a widespread deficiency placing patient safety or health in immediate jeopardy. While other aspects of this nursing home's inspection report were favorable, we have some reservations.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's more favorable category scores was in the category of long-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. It actually performed better than most nursing homes in this category. Nursing homes that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the category of short-term care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. With our short-term care assessment, we strive to craft a valuable measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we assess the facility's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. With a grade of this caliber in this category, we were not stunned to discover this place was below average in multiple staffing metrics we assess. It offered substantially fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. The final item we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 46.1 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to our last area, this facility did not fare well. Due to a poor grade of F in nursing, this was this nursing home's weakest category. When determining our nursing scores, we assess both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. Unfortunately, this nursing home also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based measures to pair with its low nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and we were quite disappointed. This facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric.
