Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Nursing grades are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This particular facility provided 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This was one of the better totals we found. Furthermore, we found that a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, it performed as well as any facility in the country in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these metrics as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care offered.
Facility Inspections
This facility also earned an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the rare places to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This grade is based on the nursing home's inspections. Inspection ratings are tied to several items found on the a nursing home's inspections. Places that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on our next area, this high end nursing home also performed well in the area of short-term care. In this area, it received a A+. Very few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our short-term care scores are presumably more important for people needing a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. It outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes with 56.4 percent of its patients returning home. This is a far higher rate than most facilities.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we graded was long-term care, where this facility was given a grade of B. This actually proved to be this facility's worst category. A nursing home is doing something right when it's poorest score still is superior to most nursing homes. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. On top of offering elite levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This percentage is also significantly better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
