Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

On top of earning a strong overall grade, this facility fared well in our short-term care category. We awarded it a grade of A- for that category. In computing our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This grade is considered to be a fair measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last statistic we considered in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 5.3 percent of this nursing home's residents were able to return home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this facility also performed well in our inspection category, which is based on the facility's government inspections. We awarded it an B+ for that area. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this area usually have very few severe deficiencies. This nursing home received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to pose an immediate threat to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are rare in this industry.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B+. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. There are quite a few datapoints included in this category. Most of the subcategories are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Maine in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a protocol of moving a resident more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next area we graded was long-term care. This facility was given a B- in the area. Our long-term care grades are meaningful for residents requiring personal care. Once we assessed the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 92.934784 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be a bit less than we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable figure. On a more positive note, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
