Facility Inspections
Although we were not high on this nursing home's overall performance, it actually received an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a B+. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with too many severe deficiencies flagged. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's second best area was long-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a B-. For residents in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 91.16466 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is slightly less than we were hoping for but still a respectable figure. Nevertheless, this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next most favorable area was short-term care. We awarded it a C in this category. This is essentially a middle of the road score in this category. Our short-term care ratings are likely more meaningful for folks in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually requires additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. In this facility's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than the typical facility. The hope is always that this does not adversely impact the quality of care. Lastly, we considered the number of residents who returned home from this nursing home. We found that 5.8 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit below the national average.
Nurse Quality
The final area we graded was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F in this category, which is a rock bottom grade. There are a number of factors included in this category. Most of these subcategories are tied to nurse staffing. This nursing home offered only 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is well below average. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing ratings. This nursing home performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
