Facility Inspections
Although we were not high on this nursing home's overall performance, it actually received an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a B+. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with too many severe deficiencies flagged. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we also wanted to point out that this facility received favorable long-term care marks in this assessment. We gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a B. This turned out to be the nursing home's second best score. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is an important category. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 71.93676 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be slightly below what we expected but still a decent percentage. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
The third category we analyzed was short-term care, where this facility was given a grade of C in this area. Our short-term care ratings are believed to be more meaningful for people requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. The key is determining what effect this had on the quality of care. The last datapoint we assessed in this category is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. We found that just 5.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home. This figure was below average.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our final category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of D in our nursing category. This is the nursing home's worst category rating. There are many factors included in this grade. Most of the criteria are tied to staffing levels. This place averaged just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. This place fared well in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
