Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections is its best category grade. In that category, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Among the reasons we rated this facility so well is that it was given a favorable long-term care grade. Indeed, long-term care turned out to be its second most favorable category score. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of A-. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is usually a good sign for resident care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 99.20635 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

We also awarded this facility a respectable score in the category of short-term care, with a B-. In the area of short-term care, we try to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the data they provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last item we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 5.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is actually below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Turning to the fourth area, this facility received a grade of B- for nursing, which we consider to be a respectable rating. Nursing grades are largely based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This figure is significantly below average. Finally, our nursing ratings also consider quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is typically a good indicator that a place has quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a nursing home supplies enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
