Although we didn't grade this nursing home favorably overall, we actually gave it an excellent score in the area of inspections, where it received an A. Our inspection scores are based on many items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key thing to look for on these reports. Most importantly, you should avoid facilities with severe deficiencies associated with risks to resident well being. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Sadly, this facility's second highest score was long-term care. Nevertheless, with a D in this area, it still fared somewhat poorly. Facilities that don't fare well in this category often do not provide as much nursing care and also may be lagging in some of the areas of routine medical care we looked at. After looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. Candidly, we were a bit worried that this facility vaccinated 37.500004 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is significantly lower than average. Surprisingly, this facility was actually decent at limiting hospitalizations. Although it had 2.42 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric wasn't bad since it had more complex patients. This was its best feature in this category

Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. There are a host of criteria included in this category. Most of these subcategories relate to nurse staffing. This facility averaged only 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Unfortunately, this place also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based metrics to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign in light of the fact that so many bed sores could be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this facility's nursing grade significantly.

Turning to the last area, this nursing home really didn't fare very well here either. With a poor grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as bad as it gets. In crafting our short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a barometer for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 28.2 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.
