Facility Inspections
In addition to faring well overall, this facility also earned a nearly flawless inspection report. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that category with an A+. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This high end nursing home also excelled in the area of short-term care, where it received a grade of A+. Few nursing homes fared better in this category. In the category of short-term care, we seek to evaluate measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. The facility offered more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the average nursing home. The last item we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Maine in this area with 72.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The third category we looked at is long-term care. Adding to its high-end resume, this nursing home also performed well in that category. In fact, it received a of A- in that category. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to provide patients with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to offering very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This figure is also significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be successful as this facility keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to our last category, this facility also excelled in our nursing category. We gave it an A- in this category. This rounded out truly elite profile. Nursing scores are primarily associated with a facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided 4.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by both of these figures. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also fared well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls leading to major injury, this facility performed better than the national average.
