Even though we gave this facility an abysmal overall grade, we gave it a C for our nursing category. Our nursing score is mostly based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures. While this nursing home got dinged a bit for nursing hours per resident, it excelled in a few of these quality measures. With fewer than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared remarkably well in this statistic. This can be an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of moving patients even once per day.

We awarded this nursing home just a D for our long-term care grade and that actually wound up as its second highest score. For residents looking for a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nursing hours is vaccines. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than most nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.

Among this place's worst category grades was a lowly F for its inspection rating. Generally, this means we found red flags on the facility's inspection reports. With nursing homes that received this poor of an inspection score, we would scrutinize the severe deficiencies on its inspection report. This facility had 3 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only favorable thing we can say is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that indicate that they posed a threat to resident health or safety. Finally, CMS flagged this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. This is not what you want to see. We advise you to direct your search elsewhere.

Moving on to the last category, this facility really didn't perform very well here either. Due to a poor grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as bad as it gets. Our short-term care ratings are based on the facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. Given its score in this area, we were not stunned to find that this facility is well below average in terms of the quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Frankly, this was about what we expected here. The final metric we considered in this category is the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 4.2 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
