Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

This facility earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its nearly flawless health inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Our inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category typically have very few severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this nursing home earned an B in the area of nursing. Our nursing rating is mostly based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next category we assessed is short-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of B-. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of residents that eventually returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 4.9 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

The last area we looked at was long-term care. We awarded it a B- in this category. This is a perfectly acceptable grade in this area. Long-term care ratings are based on the facility's volume of nursing services. This means a vast range of personal care services, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living to routine healthcare services. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Lastly, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
