Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

We would like to point out that this facility's inspection rating exceeded its overall grade. This facility earned a B+ in this category, which is one of our better grades. Inspection ratings account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this category usually have very few of these severe deficiencies. While this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this facility's more favorable category grades came in the area of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a B. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a deadly ailment for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

We also gave this nursing home a decent score in the category of nursing care, with a grade of B-. We weighed the skill-level of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses were with patients, in computing our score in this category. This facility provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility fared better in some of the quality measures we looked at. In fact, it scored well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The last area we rated is short-term care. We gave it a grade of B- in this category. This is a fair grade in this area. In determining our short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. It doesn't appear that this nursing home submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 4 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
