Long-term Care Quality
Although we did not rate this facility well overall, we want to point out its decent grade of B- in the category of long-term care. Long-term care grades are used to judge a nursing home's performance as a traditional convalescent home, as opposed to focusing more on the skilled nursing services offered by a skilled nursing facility. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients. This facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this facility a grade of C for our nursing rating. Nursing ratings are largely tied to the nursing home's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This figure is significantly below average. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics. Although this place got dinged a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in a few of these quality measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it did very well in this statistic. This can be an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of turning patients at least once a day.

Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home received its third most favorable category score in the category of short-term care. We gave this facility a C in this area, which is a decent score. Short-term care grades are often employed to grade a facility's rehabilitation services In order to provide good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide higher levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Unfortunately, this facility was below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we assessed. The question is whether this adversely affected quality of care. Finally, we assessed the number of residents who returned home from this facility. We found that 4.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit below average.
Facility Inspections
The final category we looked at is inspections. This score is based on the nursing home's recent inspections. We awarded it a score of C in this category. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. This place was hit with 10 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but we were relieved to find that none were in categories J through L. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to place patient safety or health in imminent harm or jeopardy. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.
