Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this place received a great overall grade is that it earned an A+ in short-term care. This is as good as it gets in this category. Short-term care grades are critical for patients needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires more highly-skilled nursing. This includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Wisconsin in this area with 67.4 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
To add to its dominant performance in other areas, we gave this nursing home a grade of A for its long-term care grade. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. This nursing home really impressed us in this area.
Adding to its strong resume, this facility also received an excellent nursing score, with a grade of A. When determining our nursing grades, we analyze both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This facility provided 5.5 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This was one of the higher totals we found. Furthermore, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed as well as any facility in the country in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Lastly, this facility also earned excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our best grades in that area, with an A. Few nursing homes can boast of receiving an A- or better in every category. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
