Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. We believe that one of the most critical factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially look at the severity of those deficiencies. This place was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We awarded this nursing home a grade of just D for our short-term care score and that actually ended up being its next most favorable category. Short-term care ratings are important for patients looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes more highly-skilled nursing. This includes a wide spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. Not surprisingly, we learned that this facility offers far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the typical facility. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 4.8 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality
The third area we looked at is long-term care, where this facility was given an F. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is more than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
Nurse Quality
Switching gears to our next category, this nursing home really didn't perform well in this area either. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in nursing, this is really as terrible as it gets. When calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the quantity of hours nurses commit to patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing scores. This nursing home fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these statistics to be measures of the quality of nursing care.
