Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of being a great facility overall, it also earned A+ health inspections recently. Its inspections were nearly flawless. Our inspection grades weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This facility also was elite in the category of short-term care, where it received a score of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. In the area of short-term care, we seek to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that 6.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Moving on our third area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for its long-term care score. This is a dominant score. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

In our final area, this nursing home also was given a very strong nursing score, with a grade of A-. This completed a very favorable report card. Nursing grades are primarily tied to the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Alabama in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a protocol of moving a resident more frequently.
