Nurse Quality
We also would like to emphasize the fact that this nursing home excelled in our nursing score. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Our nursing grade assesses the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of training of those nurses and the amount of time spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient daily. Approximately a quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are among the most highly skilled nurses. Both of these statistics beat out the national average. Finally, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed as well as any facility Washington in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
This first-rate nursing home also dominated in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a grade of A+. Only a small group of facilities fared better in this category. In determining our short-term care scores, we assess a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This rating is typically a useful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This place fared as well as just about any nursing home in the country with 61.5 percent of its residents returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this metric.
Facility Inspections
Another impressive feature of this facility is its inspection grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A-. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category generally have very few severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we analyzed was long-term care, in which this nursing home was awarded a grade of B. Even though this ended up being its weakest category grade, this is still an impressive score. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to provide residents with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is often a deadly ailment for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't take any chances. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Although it had 3.08 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was middle of the road due to it having more complex patients.
