One of the reasons this ended up being a strong nursing home is that it earned an impressive inspection grade. In fact, inspections is its best category grade. In that area, we gave this facility an A. Our inspection grades are based on several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This facility is also strong in the area of long-term care, where it received a grade of B+. It performed better than most nursing homes in this category. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in this category typically provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure patients are well cared for. After we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 91.21622 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. The nursing score includes a host of subcategories. The most heavily weighted factor is the number of hours nurses spend with residents. This particular nursing home provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final category we scored was short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a solid grade in this area, with a B-. Although this wasn't as favorable as many of its other grades, it is still not the end of the world. In the area of short-term care, we try to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess a facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 3.7 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
