Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection score. In fact, its inspection score was far better than its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility an A+. Inspection grades are based on items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Another one of this facility's more impressive category grades was in the area of long-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in this category typically provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are well cared for. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is much higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

We gave this nursing home just a D for our short-term care grade. This is not one of our better scores. In determining our short-term care ratings, we look at a nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This score is typically a fair assessment of the facility's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The final category we analyzed was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this area, which is a poor grade. This is certainly a major disappointment. We scrutinized the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours those nurses were with patients, in calculating our grade in this category. With a meager 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily, this place's nurse staffing levels were significantly below average. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing ratings. This nursing home performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
