Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is it received an A+ inspection grade. This is as good as it gets in this very important area. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this nursing home received a top-shelf grade of A in our short-term care area. Our short-term care scores are based on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a wide scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The final measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. It performed as well as just about any facility in Arizona in this area with 63.5 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A- in our long-term care area. When facilities receive this kind of score in long-term care it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 98.91305 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
Turning to the fourth area, this facility was awarded a very strong nursing score. While this isn't nearly as impressive as many of its other scores, this is nevertheless one of the stronger scores we offer. There are a number of criteria included in this grade. Most of the criteria reflect nurse staffing. This nursing home provides high levels of nursing care, averaging 3.9 hours per resident per day. This is more nursing care than most nursing homes provide. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls which lead to serious injury, this place performed as well as any facility in Arizona. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
