Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Our inspection ratings are based on many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also fared well in the area of long-term care. Indeed, we awarded it a score of A- in that category, which happens to be one of our most impressive grades. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.0099 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. While it had 2.4 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was close to the national average due to it having some more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home earned a strong nursing score this year as well. It earned one of our higher grades in that category with a grade of F. Our nursing score is based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of training of those nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This facility provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This nursing home had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's weakest category was short-term care, which is the final area we analyzed. It received a lowly F for this category. In spite of some decent grades in other areas, this grade is still concerning so we wanted to make a note of it. Our short-term care ratings are meaningful for patients requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires more skilled nursing services. This includes a broad spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The final item we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 24.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics doomed this facility's short-term care score.
