In addition to being a quality nursing home overall, this facility really excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. In calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are seeing residents as well as the level of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home in the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of turning residents more frequently.

In addition, this nursing home also performed even better in our inspection category, which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B+ for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Our inspection scores are based on several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that score well in this area have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

This facility was given an impressive short-term care score as well. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that category with a grade of B+. In our short-term care assessment, we seek to create a sound barometer for rehabilitation. In this process, we assess a facility's offerings of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be a real strength for this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the country in this area with 59.2 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.

Historical

The final area we looked at was long-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of B+. This wrapped up a very favorable profile. Not many nursing homes earned a B+ or higher in every category. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 46.7276 percent of its patients. This is a few points below what we expected but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. This nursing home also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 1.41 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
