Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B- for that category, which is one of our better scores. These inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We were also surprised to discover that this nursing home earned a solid short-term care grade this year. We awarded it a B- in this area. Short-term care scores are based on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled nursing services. This means a broad spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. Unfortunately, this facility was below average in terms of its level of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Lastly, we assessed the number of residents that were able to return home from this facility. We found that 5.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was actually well below average.

Long-term Care Quality
Remarkably, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C for our long-term care score, which is not a bad grade. In forming our long-term care ratings, we analyze the facility's ability to maintain its permanent residents' health and quality of life. On top of considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents. Lastly, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
The final area we analyzed is nursing. This nursing home was given a very poor grade of F in that category. Nursing ratings are tied to levels of nurse staffing. With a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily, this place's nurse staffing levels were quite a bit below average. In addition to being below average in nursing hours per resident, this facility also had poor scores in the quality-based metrics we looked at in computing our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in both of these metrics. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
