Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality facility is that it received a very impressive inspection rating. Inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In that category, we awarded this facility an A+. Inspection ratings are based on several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

In addition, this nursing home also was awarded favorable short-term care grades this year. Indeed, we gave them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. In calculating our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that 5.2 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This nursing home's next best category turned out to be its long-term care grade, where it was given a B-. For prospective patients seeking a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is higher than the average nursing home. This nursing home keeps its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The next area we graded was nursing. We awarded this facility a D for nursing, leaving this as its least impressive grade. We looked at the levels of nurses at the nursing home, in addition to the number of hours the nurses worked with residents, in computing our score in this category. This nursing home averaged only 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is an alarmingly low total. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing ratings. This facility performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these data points to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
