In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Our inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category tend to have very few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Finally, this nursing home also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. It performed as well as any nursing home the country in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.

The third area we looked at is long-term care. Adding to its dominant resume, this nursing home also excelled in this area. In fact, we awarded it a grade of of A for that category. When facilities receive this type of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of providing well above average levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This percentage is also significantly higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.94 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

The last category we scored was short-term care, where this facility was given an A. This rounded out a very favorable profile. Few nursing homes earned an A- or better in in each area we assessed. Our short-term care ratings are probably most critical for folks requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally mandates more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not just nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of care from registered nurses to its residents. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return home from this facility. We found that it outperformed the overwhelming majority of facilities in this area with 56.3 percent of its residents returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
