In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. Inspection grades weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category usually have few of these severe deficiencies. Unfortunately, it does not appear that we were able to find deficiency data for this nursing home. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This facility performed well in our long-term care category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which turns out to be one of our most favorable scores. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia tragically can be a deadly condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility does not leave this to chance. This facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had just 1.69 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

This nursing home is also above average in the area of short-term care, where it was given a grade of B. It performed more favorably than most facilities in this category. In computing these short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to create a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. This ended up being more of a strength for this nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Ohio in this area with 64.6 percent of its patients returning home. With most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay residents return home.

The final category we assessed ended up being this facility's poorest area. Nevertheless, even in its worst category we still gave it an acceptable grade of C for our nursing category. The nursing category includes several subcategories, many of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these areas as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
