Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. It doesn't look like we were able to find deficiency data for this facility. We wish we had more data for this facility. Without all of the information regarding deficiencies, it was challenging to fully evaluate it in this area.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Contributing to its high-end assessment, this nursing home also received a strong short-term care grade, with a score of A-. Short-term care grades are generally employed to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To provide good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home, which as an area this facility performed much more favorably. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in this area with 70.4 percent of its residents returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. Nursing ratings are heavily correlated with levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The last area we rated was long-term care, where this facility was given a B. While this ended up being its worst category score, this is nevertheless a favorable score. Nursing homes that do well in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia tragically can be a life threatening illness for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.71 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
