Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility is also above average in the area of long-term care, where it was given a score of B+. It outperformed most facilities in this category. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. After we finished looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home does not leave this to chance. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility's third most favorable area is its short-term care score, where it was awarded a grade of B-. Short-term care ratings are based on the facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a vast scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. We found that 5.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well below average.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

The final area we analyzed was nursing. For that category, we awarded this facility a C. We weighed the skill-level of nurses employed by the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours those nurses spent with residents, in computing our score in this area. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics. While this nursing home got dinged a bit for nursing hours per resident, it actually excelled in some of these quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it fared well in this metric. This is often an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of turning a resident at least once a day.
