Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection grade. In fact, inspections ended up being its best category. In this area, we awarded this facility an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be relatively minor. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple relatively minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. Our nursing rating is primarily associated with a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility offers extremely high levels of nursing care, averaging 4.9 hours per patient daily. This is more nursing care than nearly any other facility offers. Finally, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we assessed in this category. It performed well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Short-term Care Quality
Building on its high-end assessment, this facility also received a dominant short-term care grade, with a grade of A-. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally must feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. This place fared better than most nursing homes in the nation in this area with 54 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
The fourth area we looked at is long-term care, where this facility received a B+. This finished off a very favorable profile. Not many facilities received a B+ or better in all four categories. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of offering very favorable levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This statistic is also much higher than the majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be successful as this nursing home keeps its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.54 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
