Facility Inspections
Although we were not high on this facility's overall performance, it did receive an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a grade of B. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this facility a grade of B- for our nursing rating. Our nursing score is mostly based on the facility's nurse staffing. According to its CMS reports, this nursing home provided an average of 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which was above average. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based metrics, such as preventing major falls. This facility performed admirably in this statistic. Avoiding serious falls is often a reliable indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Some falls can be avoided if a facility offers enough nurses to assist its patients.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a respectable grade in the category of short-term care, where it received a C. Our short-term care scores are considered to be more meaningful for residents in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not only nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final statistic we considered in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 40 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is long-term care. We awarded this facility a C in this category. For residents looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. Once we finished looking at the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. We were pleased to find that this facility vaccinates 99.681526 percent of its patients for pneumonia. The last statistic we assessed is its hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 3.37 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this figure is somewhat concerning, this number may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the medical complexity of residents.
