Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

On top of faring well overall, this facility also received nearly flawless government inspections. As a result, it received one of our best scores in that area with an A+. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

We also gave this facility a grade of A for our long-term care score. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't roll the dice on this issue. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-. This facility didn't perform quite as well in this category as it did in some other categories. Nevertheless, this is still a respectable score. The nursing score includes several subcategories. The most important one is the number of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other nursing homes. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this nursing home surprisingly excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In fact, it performed well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. Many consider these areas to be reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next category we looked at is short-term care. This nursing home was given a strong short-term care score this year, with a grade of C. Even though this wasn't quite as strong as a few of its other scores, this remains an acceptable score for that area. Short-term care scores are based in part on the facility's quantity of highly-skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a vast range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Unfortunately, it does not appear that this facility submitted information on registered nurse or physical therapist staffing. The final statistic we considered in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is below average.
