Short-term Care Quality
Although we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a decent short-term care rating this year. We gave it a B- in that category. In determining these short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to devise a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, this place offers both registered nurses and physical therapists. Not all facilities offer both. The final measure we considered in this category is the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This place performed well in this area with 61.1 percent of its residents returning home. With most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
As it turns out, its government inspection reports were not the source of this nursing home's bottom of the barrel overall grade. It earned a C in this category. Our inspection ratings account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 4 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but fortunately none were in any of the categories labeled G through L. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Lastly, this facility was flagged by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. We prefer to avoid facilities with this designation. Please do your best to find an alternative nursing home.
Nurse Quality
This facility ended up receiving rock bottom score in our nursing category. It received an F in this category. Our nursing grade focuses on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of training of those nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This nursing home provided just 2.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily. In addition to receiving below average marks for nursing hours, this place was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this place was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic pulled down this facility's nursing score significantly.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we analyzed is long-term care. We gave it an abysmal F for this area, which is a bottom of the barrel score. If you are seeking anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care grades. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 94.67455 percent of its patients, which is higher than the average nursing home. We were far less impressed with its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 4.3 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is more than double the national average. This is definitely an alarming figure.
