In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. This facility received 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be severe. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident health or safety. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an B. Nursing grades are largely associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of moving patients more frequently.

In addition, this facility also received favorable long-term care grades this year. In fact, we gave it one of our stronger grades in that category, with a score of B. Nursing homes that do well in this category typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 97.86585 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a life threatening condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't take any chances. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

The last category we rated is short-term care. This nursing home was given a C for the area. In the area of short-term care, we seek to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Unfortunately, we weren't able to track down information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. The last metric we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 4.6 percent of this facility's patients returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
