On top of faring well overall, this nursing home also received nearly flawless government inspections. As a result, it received one of our best scores in that area with an A+. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this area usually have few of these severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This nursing home was given a strong long-term care grade as well. We gave it one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. Nursing homes that receive this kind of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are kept in good health. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia can be a life threatening health condition for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home does not leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

This facility's next best category was its nursing grade, where it received a grade of B-. While this didn't quite match its scores in some of the categories discussed above, this is still a decent score. We looked at the levels of nurses working for the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of hours those nurses were with patients, in determining our grade in this category. This facility averages 0.2 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is well below average. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics. While this facility got docked a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in a few of these quality-based measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed very well in this metric. This is generally an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a policy of moving a patient even once per day.

The last category we assessed is short-term care. This facility was awarded a strong short-term care rating this year, with a grade of B-. Even though this isn't quite as dominant as a few of its other grades, this is still a decent rating in that category. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. It does not appear that this facility submitted information about its staffing of registered nurses or physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
