Facility Inspections

Grade: A

While we were not high on this nursing home's overall score, it actually received a very impressive inspection report this year. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our highest grades in that category with an A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are relatively insignificant. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of short-term care. This turned out to be its second best category. In that area, we awarded this facility a C. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this facility provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. The tricky part is determining what effect this had on the quality of care. The final measure we considered in this category is the number of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

Another unfortunate development is the F this facility received in the area of long-term care. For patients seeking a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility administered the vaccine to 95.2 percent of its patients, which is a very respectable percentage. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The next category we scored is nursing. This facility received a rock bottom grade of F in that area. We assessed the qualifications of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses worked with residents, in computing our grade in this category. With only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this place's nurse staffing levels were far below average. On top of its weak nursing hour totals, this facility earned suboptimal scores in several of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing scores. We found that a higher percentage of this facility's patients suffered falls leading to serious injury.
