Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home an A for our short-term care grade. In determining our short-term care grades, we size up the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is more often than not a fair measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents that were able to return home from this facility. We found that 6.6 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also performed well in inspections, which is based on its recent government inspections. We awarded it a grade of A for that area. These inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality
Turning to another strength for this nursing home, we gave them one of our more favorable scores in our long-term care category as well, with a B+. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 94 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia can be a dangerous ailment for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
The next category we rated was nursing. This nursing home was awarded an above average nursing rating in our assessment, with a B-. Although this is not quite as good as several of its other category grades, this is nevertheless an acceptable score in this area. When calculating a facility's nursing rating, we look at the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility averages just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is not an impressive total. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place surprisingly fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. It scored well in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the number of hours of care provided.
