Nurse Quality

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive nursing score. In that area, we awarded this facility an A. Our nursing score focuses on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with residents. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Iowa in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving a patient more often.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Adding to its impressive category grades, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our inspections rating. Inspection ratings are based on many datapoints found on the a nursing home's government inspections. Facilities that score well in this area have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. While this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are uncommon in the industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

Turning to another strength for this facility, we gave them one of our more favorable scores in our short-term care category as well, with a B+. Short-term care grades are based in part on the nursing home's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a vast spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the number of residents that returned home from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

Switching gears to our final category, this facility was awarded a respectable long-term care grade. While this was not quite as strong as some of its other category grades, this is still a middle of the pack score. In determining our long-term care ratings, we scrutinize the personal care offered to a nursing home's patients. After considering the amount of care provided by nurses, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. We were optimistic to learn that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. This facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
