Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

One of the reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it earned an impressive inspection score. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category. In this area, we gave this facility an A-. Our inspection grades weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with better scores in this area typically have very few severe deficiencies. This place was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility really excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Nursing scores are largely based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this facility also was given favorable short-term care grades this year. Indeed, we gave it one of our more favorable grades in that area, with a grade of B+. In our short-term care grade, we try to create a fair gauge for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess the facility's levels of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The final category we assessed was long-term care, is this nursing home's weakest category. We awarded this nursing home a D in that category. This is one of just a few weak points in a very solid profile. For residents looking for a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is more than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
