Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

On top of receiving a great overall grade, this facility fared well in the area of long-term care. We awarded it an impressive grade of A for that category. In a long-term care environment, the primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. One of the statistics we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 80.96886 percent of its residents. Although its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we like to see, at least this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Turning to our inspection category, this facility excelled in that area, which is based on the nursing home's inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This nursing home was assessed 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered severe. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies an imminent risk to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A-minus

Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category. Our nursing rating consists of many subcategories, but the primary consideration is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Connecticut in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of turning patients even once per day.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

The fourth area we rated is short-term care, where this nursing home was awarded an A-. This wrapped up an elite report card. Only a select few facilities earned an A- or better in all four categories. Our short-term care grades are based on a facility's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This means a broad scope of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that 5.8 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.
