This facility received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its excellent inspections in recent years. We gave them an A- in this category. Inspection scores weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple relatively minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

We also gave this nursing home a strong score in short-term care. This nursing home received a B+ in this area, which is one of our more favorable scores. Short-term care grades are typically employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. We were extremely impressed to learn that this nursing home provides its patients measurably more physical therapist hours than most other facilities. The last item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Connecticut in this area with 57.4 percent of its residents returning home.

Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-, which is a decent grade. Our nursing rating consists of several subcategories, most of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also considered quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. This nursing home was above average in many of the major areas we focus on, with good scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.

Our last area is long-term care, in which we awarded this facility a C in that area. If you are seeking services other than short-term rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. After considering the quantity of nursing care, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination record. We were optimistic to find that this nursing home vaccinates 98.34711 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Finally, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.47 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
