Facility Inspections
On top of receiving an elite overall score, this nursing home earned an A+ inspection grade. This is based on its recent inspection reports. An A+ in this category is one of the best complements we can pay to a facility. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Among the reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it was awarded a favorable long-term care score. Indeed, long-term care ended up being its second best category score. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of A. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are a key measure. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 86.84211 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be a few points lower than we were hoping for but still a respectable percentage. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Nurse Quality
Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. The nursing rating is based on several factors, most of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This facility fared well in some of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided with better nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we graded is short-term care. In this category, we gave this facility a solid grade of C. This actually proved to be this facility's weakest area. Our short-term care grades are crucial for residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a broad spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last measure we considered in this area is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that just 39 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
