Awards

Nurse Quality
We also would like to note that this nursing home excelled in our nursing category. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this area. In determining a facility's nursing grade, we look at the amount of time nurses are with patients and the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Iowa in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of turning a patient more often.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a score of A+ for its long-term care grade. For prospective patients looking for a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 86.14458 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be a few points lower than we expected but still a reasonably acceptable percentage. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we had hoped, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite insignificant. While this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
In the final category we graded, this nursing home was awarded an impressive grade grade of A in our short-term care category. With this grade, the facility topped off a straight A report card. Short-term care scores are critical for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a vast range of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final measure we considered in this category is the number of residents who returned home from the nursing home. We found that 5.7 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.
