Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility also excelled at short-term care, where it earned an A. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. In calculating our short-term care scores, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This score is typically a reliable measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 5.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- in that category. Our nursing score is mostly based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this place had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In the last category we looked at, this nursing home received a very strong grade of B+ in our long-term care category. With this grade, the facility wrapped up a very strong report card. Long-term care ratings in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. One of the data points we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This is a proven method to minimize unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the elderly population. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
